01 — THE OBJECT
Abell 85
Garlic Pod Nebula
Abell 85 (also called CTB 1) is the remnant of an old supernova: a massive star exploded about ten thousand years ago, and its material is still expanding as a shell of gas. Its slightly rounded shape earned it the nickname “garlic pod”. The exact distance is still debated (often around 10,000 light-years), but the object is very faint: long exposures are needed to reveal it.
