01 — THE OBJECT
Sun
Sun
The Sun is our star, a sphere of hot gas about 150 million km away (8 light-minutes). An eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front of it from our point of view: depending on the alignment, the occultation is partial or total.

02 — THE PROJECT
Solar eclipse 2026
I had not really taken the astrophotography gear out in almost a year. An occasion like this was one I clearly could not miss. I was finally able to capture the solar eclipse of 12 August from the Cap Garonne mine, in the Var. This montage traces the different phases of the eclipse, from the first moments when the Moon starts to bite the solar disk to the thin crescent of Sun at the end of the event. A session quite different from my usual deep-sky nights: here everything plays out in a few minutes, with light and atmosphere changing constantly. And there is not really a second chance if something goes wrong. The day was not only about astrophotography. It was also a real observing and sharing session with everyone present at Cap Garonne. Living and watching this event together made the moment even more special. Thank you all for a very good time together. I tried to keep a relatively natural process while bringing out the few sunspots visible on the surface. A truly unusual event to observe and photograph — and probably one of my most memorable astro sessions.
